The Archeological Reserve Abritus

The town of Abritus is one of the best investigated, modern and exhibited, ancient towns in the country located near the town of Razgrad. This town was unknown for the science and local people for ages.

Before 2000 years and more, 1km to the east from the present town of Razgrad was found a Thracian settlement with unknown name. The Romans had continued its life at the half of the Ist  century, after they had established their power in Dolna Mizia county. The ruins of the Abritus town remind for an exuberant Thracian - Rome town, survived till the end of VI century, when it was despoiled, destroyed, burned down and desolated by the Avars and other tribes with their despoiled invasions.

During VII century over the ruins of the ancient town of Abritus was found an early-medieval Bulgarian fortress, which was destroyed by the crusade of the Grand duke Svetoslav(968-981) from Kiev. Into the eastern part of this medieval settlement was built an imposing Christian complex of a cult - episcopate, which was destroyed at the end of Xth and XIth centuries.

The excavations started in 1887, organized by the acad.Ananie Yavashov into the western part of the place Hissarlaka. He had founded a basilica with a nave and two aisles from V-VI centuries. Other excavations were done in the eastern, the highly part of the place in 1893, where he had founded an old Christian domical church from V-VI centuries.

Systematic archeological excavations and researches had started in 1953. During the first several years into the eastern part of the ancient fortress was founded an large slave-holding private building with an inner yard and 22 marble Ionian columns and 15 columns on the southern part, covered pavement and a small temple next to the western part of the building, dated in V-VI centuries.

One of the sensations of the archeology was the discovery of the biggest late- antique monetary treasure in Bulgaria - which was 835 coinage by ten imperators and empresses from V century.  

The discovery of the name and of the town of course is also a big achievement of the Bulgarian archeological science. The archeological researches still have continued. 

Abritus is a town with an international popularity. With a decision N: 3 from 03.12.1984 the town was announced as an archeological reserve. It was also built a building of the Abritus specialized museum with an exposition of some of the founded excavations which make clear the scene of the material and spirit culture during the classical antiquity. In 2002 into the region of the museum was displayed the founded Lapidarii, including about 60 epigraph monuments, gravestones and architectural details.
